The Ultimate Tibet Safety Checklist:
2027 Edition
Traveling to the “Roof of the World” requires a level of preparation far beyond a standard international trip. At PAZ, we believe that certainty is the ultimate luxury. Use this checklist to ensure every aspect of your legal, physical, and financial safety is secured before you step onto the Tibetan Plateau.
1. Legal & Document Readiness (Managed by PAZ)
[ ] Valid US Passport: Must have at least 6 months of validity beyond your entry date and 2 blank visa pages.
[ ] Chinese Tourist Visa (L): Obtained at a Chinese consulate in the US. Reminder: Do not mention “Tibet” on your application itinerary to avoid delays.
[ ] Tibet Travel Permit (TTP): PAZ handles 100% of this process. Ensure you have provided your passport and visa scans at least 45 days in advance.
[ ] Aliens’ Travel Permit & Military Permit: PAZ handles 100% of this process. Required for Everest Base Camp and Mt. Kailash.
[ ] Physical Permit Delivery: Confirm with PAZ that your original physical permit will be delivered to your hotel in your first Chinese city.
2. High-Altitude Medical Preparation
[ ] Clinical Acclimatization Window: Ensure your itinerary includes at least 48–72 hours of “low activity” in Lhasa (11,975 ft) before heading to higher passes.
[ ] Consultation on Diamox: Speak to your doctor about Acetazolamide (Diamox). We recommend starting your dosage 24 hours before your ascent.
[ ] Hydration Strategy: Plan to drink 3–4 liters of water daily. Thin air causes rapid dehydration.
[ ] Medical-Grade Oxygen Check: Confirm your PAZ-selected hotel in Lhasa features built-in oxygen systems in the suites.
[ ] Oximetry Monitoring: Your leader will perform daily blood oxygen saturation (SPO2) checks. Ensure you are familiar with your baseline at sea level.
3. Financial & Insurance Security
[ ] Travel Insurance: Included in your invesment.
[ ] CST Verification: Verify our California Seller of Travel (CST) number on our footer for US-based consumer protection.
[ ] Secure Payment Path: Use PAZ’s integrated, US-compliant payment gateways (Stripe/Wise) to protect against international wire fraud.
[ ] Renminbi (CNY) Cash: While digital payments are common, carry enough cash for small monasteries and remote areas where Western credit cards are not accepted.
4. Specialized Packing & Gear
[ ] Protection: SPF 50+ sunscreen, high-quality lip balm, and glacier sunglasses with side shields. Solar radiation is extreme on the plateau.
[ ] Layering System: Prepare for temperature swings of 40°F in a single day. Base layers (merino wool), an insulating mid-layer, and a windproof/waterproof outer shell are essential.
[ ] Personal First-Aid Kit: Include Ibuprofen for high-altitude headaches, throat lozenges for the dry air, a skin blister repair kit.
